Gilbert Homecoming 2010 is a total success

WINSTED — The Gilbert School celebrated Homecoming Weekend Oct. 22 and 23, highlighted by a 45-0 Gilbert-Northwestern football shutout over Windsor Locks and a dance Saturday evening.

Gilbert’s four classes participated in an international mural competition as part of Spirit Week. The junior class won with their creative representation of China.

The senior class came in second, representing Egypt; the freshman were third with the United States; and the sophomores took fourth place with France.

Associate Athletic Director Patrick Cooke noted that the overall Spirit Week competition was won by the senior class, with the juniors coming in a close second.

On Friday night, both the girls and boys soccer teams suffered tough losses to Lewis Mills and Shepaug, respectively, but the volleyball team won against Oliver Wolcott Tech, 3-2. Amy Bardino played a integral role in the win with 12 aces and 12 digs, while Shannon Tuozzo had nine aces and four kills. Gilbert volleyball remains 6-7 overall and hoped to tally another win Tuesday aginst Goodwin Tech at home.

Gilbert-Northwestern football had an amazing showing against Windsor Locks Saturday at Van Why Field. The Yellowjackets dominated, tallying up a 38-0 lead. After an impressive performance by the Gilbert Band, Color Guard and cheerleaders, the team returned to the field to maintain the lead, adding just one touchdown to make the final score 45-0. Drew McCarthy, Connor Mcghee, Bobby Lippincott and Devon Molway each scored touchdowns.

Gilbert’s next home game is Saturday, Nov. 13, 1 p.m.,  against Canton High School.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
