Good Dog Foundation to benefit from clothing sale

MILLBROOK — The J. McLaughlin clothing boutique in Millbrook will host a three-day event to benefit the Good Dog Foundation from Friday, May 13, to Sunday, May 15. Customers who mention “good dogs” will have 20 percent of their purchase cost donated to the foundation.Susan Fireman, the executive trainer for the Good Dog Foundation, will be at J. McLaughlin on Saturday, May 14, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. to evaluate dogs and discuss the training courses that prepare dogs and their owners for therapy sessions.The Good Dogs Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn that trains and certifies canines used in animal assisted therapy. The foundation coordinates with health-care facilities that use animal-assisted therapy and sends Good Dog Teams — a volunteer handler and a trained dog — to aid the healing process and improve the quality of life in patients.J. NORTH CANAAN — Concerns mounted last week across the state and Northwest Corner that proposed farmland tax increases could threaten the future of working farms. In response, owners of large agricultural tracts warned that higher property tax assessments would make it impossible to continue operating under the same rules as residential development.

Those concerns — echoed by farmers who traveled to Hartford to testify and amplified by local lawmakers — prompted Gov. Ned Lamont to order an immediate halt to steep increases in farmland property tax assessments that critics said could push land out of agriculture and into more intensive use.

Winter costs mount as snowstorm hits the Northwest Corner

FALLS VILLAGE — A powerful winter storm dumped more than 18 inches of snow in parts of the Northwest Corner of Connecticut Sunday, Jan. 25, testing town highway departments that were well prepared for the event but already straining under the cost of an unusually snowy season.

Ahead of the storm, Gov. Ned Lamont declared a state of emergency and urged residents to avoid travel as hazardous conditions developed Sunday and continued into Monday. Parts of the region were hit with more than 18 inches, according to the National Weather Service, with heavy, persistent bands falling all day Sunday and continuing into Monday morning.

CORNWALL — At the recommendation of the Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department, on Jan. 20 the Board of Selectmen voted to move forward with the purchase of two new trucks.

Greenwood Emergency Vehicles, located in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, was chosen as the manufacturer. Of the three bids received, Greenwood was the lowest bidder on the desired mini pumper and a rescue pumper.
