Having a ball at Kent Common

KENT — After her coveted tennis courts were finally rebuilt after 16 years, Kent Park and Recreation Director Lesly Ferris inaugurated the refurbished courts at Kent Common Park by smacking the first ball across the net.The courts had been rebuilt after 16 years, an upgrade that was a long time coming and highly anticipated. The tennis courts, along with other improvements to the Kent Common Park, were showcased at a Park and Recreation open house held June 21.Before the renovation, Ferris said, “The courts were full of cracks and generally in very bad condition.”There are now new nets, net posts and a new concrete surface that is royal purple and cyan. Outside the tennis courts, a cement floor was added to the pavilion. There is a new grill that was used to cook delicious hot dogs and hamburgers for open house guests. The lawn in front of the tennis courts was also cleared. The project was funded with $100,000 from the town’s Five-Year Capital Plan. It’s been planned since Ferris became director 16 years ago, but over the years the funds were frequently allocated to more pressing town needs. The results were worth the wait. Dave Dunleavy, who is chairman of the Park and Recreation Commission, said, “The park is something that the town can take pride in.” To use the tennis courts, Kent residents must get a park pass at Town Hall or Emery Park. This pass also grants use of the Emery Park. The pavilion is open to the public, but private occasions such as birthday parties require a reservation.
