Helen (Miller) Canevari

RHINEBECK — Helen (Miller) Canevari, 95, a Rhinebeck resident since 1987, died peacefully Aug. 10, 2016, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.

Born in Sharon, she was the daughter of Genevieve (Maloney) and Harry Miller, owners of the Brick Block Hotel in Millerton.

Mrs. Canevari graduated from Millerton High School in 1938 and Mildred Elley Business School at Albany, N.Y., in 1940. 

After graduation from Mildred Elley, she opened a men’s apparel shop in one of the hotel stores.

Helen was an accomplished equestrian and avid tennis player.  She also was a volunteer in the U.S. Army Aircraft Warning Service.

She was employed with the investment firm of Cooley & Co. in Lakeville; and in 1970 she was employed by Dr. Peter H. Gott  as his office manager until her retirement.

After moving to Rhinebeck in 1987 she became a communicant of the Good Shepherd Church. She was a member of the Women’s Society and served as vice president for one term.

Helen was the co-founder of the Senior Health Insurance Program in Rhinebeck for seniors needing help completing medical insurance forms.

Mrs. Canevari is survived by a son, John A. Canevari of Rhinebeck; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Ann and Albert Montaneli of Bozeman, Mont.;  three grandchildren, Ryan Anthony Parsons, Dr. Hillary Renee Parsons and Shane Bradford Parsons; and three great-grandchildren, Connor, Madison and Robert Parsons.

Arrangements are under the care of the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home in Rhinebeck.  

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 17 at the Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck.  Interment followed at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Great Barrington.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
