Homecoming at HVRHS drew alums

FALLS VILLAGE — It was a bit of a scramble right up to the end, but the reunion of the Housatonic Valley Regional High School class of 1980 went off more or less as planned this weekend.

Organizer Krysia Bibro had to send out a last-minute alert  as the planned dinner-and-dancing at the New West Main Cafe in Lakeville fell through due to an injury to a member of the restaurant’s staff.

But classmate Theresa Freund came to the rescue, and dinner and dancing went on instead at Freund’s Farm Market and Bakery in East Canaan, with music from the Steve Dunn Band.

During the day, the alums took a tour of the high school with Interim Assistant Principal David Bayersdorfer and retired coach Denise Dower; participated in a ceremonial tree planting; and gathered at midfield with Housy gridiron greats during halftime of the Housatonic vs. Coventry football game.

The class also rasied over $1,500 for continued landscaping efforts at HVRHS.

Former principals Jack Mahoney and Ed Kirby were on hand to greet the alumni, and the Who’sCTEKS Robotics Club had their latest robot picking up balls  and performing other feats.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
