Homer Ellsworth Germond

MILLERTON — Homer Ellsworth Germond, 79, died unexpectedly on Feb. 27, 2012, at his home in Cape Coral, Fla. Jim, as he was known throughout his life, was born on Dec. 18, 1932, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to Florence (Robinson) and Homer Germond. He lived most of his life in Dutchess County, specifically in Stanfordville and Millerton, and retired to Florida in 2001. Jim graduated from Millerton High School, worked for Seaman’s Dairy, Fitchett Brothers Dairy and Heathcoate Farms. He loved to hunt and was an avid outdoorsman. He was married to Evelyn Merwin and is survived by their four children, Mark and his wife, Julia Germond, of Stanfordville, Trudy Minnick of Alfred Station, N.Y., Jamie and her husband, Lynn Basiliere, of Chateaugay Lake, N.Y., and Jennifer and her husband, Thomas Briggs, of Shippensburg, Pa.; his grandchildren, Jesse Germond of Stanfordville, Megan Minnick of Alfred Station, Kate Minnick of Malone, N.Y., Anders Ibholm of Chateaugay Lake, Alex Minnick of Potsdam, N.Y., and Abigail Briggs of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; his wife, Elisabeth and stepchildren, Ed Greenwood of Cape Coral and Donna and her husband, Robert Akerman, and their sons, Ryan and Damien, of North Carolina; an aunt and uncle; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Suydam; and a grandson, Sgt. Casey Briggs of the US Army. Services to commemorate his life will be held at a later date. Fuller Metz Funeral Home in Cape Coral has charge of arrangements.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
