Housy boys soccer roundup

The Housatonic boys soccer team hosted The Gilbert School Oct. 14 and came away with a 3-2 victory.

Housatonic took the early lead with a goal by Chris Lynch, assisted by Andrew Hoffman.  In the second half of the game, Lynch scored agin, with an assist by Kyle Godburn.  Gilbert responded with a goal, only to have Andrew Hoffman score for Housatonic, assisted by Peter O’Reilly.  Gilbert scored their final goal, and the Housatonic defensive effort worked hard to hold the final score to 3-2.

On Oct. 17, the boys hosted Lewis Mills, who are tied with Nonnewaug at the top of the league standings.  For the first 20 minutes of the game, Housatonic, while not having many chances to score, held their own against the very fast Mills team.  Mills tallied their first goal about 28 minutes into the game, and that opened the door for many opportunities for them to score.  They left Housatonic with a 6-0 victory.

For a third home game in a row, Housatonic hosted Terryville Oct 22. They played to a 5-5 tie in Terryville earlier in the season. This time both teams played much better defensively.  Terryville opened the scoring, to take an early 1-0 lead.  Kevin Diamond scored for Housatonic, assisted by Peter O’Reilly, to tie the game.  Late in the game, Terryville seemed have a score on a long shot. Alex Hall sped to the goal line after a long run to clear the ball off the line to preserve the tie at 1-1.

Housatonic hosted their final home game of the season, against Northwestern, Oct. 24. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie in the first game of the season.  Northwestern scored about eight minutes into the game, with Andrew Hoffman, assisted by Kevin Diamond, tying the score about 10 minutes later.  Northwestern tallied two more goals, only to have Peter O’Reilly score for Housatonic to bring the score to 3-2 at halftime.

Housatonic made adjustments at half-time, that helped them have more opportunities to score, but as has been the way all season, there were many opportunities that were not converted, so the game ended 3-2 for a Northwestern victory.

After the game, which was the seniors’ last home game, the seniors and their parents were recognized for their hard work, great attitudes and the positive example they set for the team.  Seniors recognized were: Kevin Cantele, goalie; Kevin Diamond, midfield; Kyle Godburn, midfield; Alex Hall, fullback; Nate Indorf, stopper; Tim Kruger, stopper/sweeper; Chris Lynch, stopper/striker; Peter O’Reilly, midfield; and Karen Hutchings, manager.

Walls still surprise me. If you look hard enough, you can find buried treasure.
Marge Parkhurst

After nearly 50 years of painting some of Litchfield County’s oldest homes and landmark properties, Marge Parkhurst has developed an eye for the past—reading the clues left behind in stenciled vines, forgotten bottles and newspapers tucked into walls, each revealing a small but vivid piece of Connecticut history.

Parkhurst was stripping wallpaper in a farmhouse in Colebrook — the kind of historic home she has spent decades restoring — when she noticed something odd. Three layers of paper had already come off — each one a different era’s idea of decoration — and beneath them, just barely visible under dull, off-white plaster, a pattern emerged.
