Housy girls defeat Northwestern

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School girls varsity soccer team won its fourth consecutive game on Saturday, Sept. 20, with a 6-2 victory over Northwestern Regional High School. The Mountaineers have outscored their opponents by a combined total of 38-3 and currently sit at 5-0 on the season.

Housy quickly jumped on the attack to begin the game and notched their first goal when they worked the ball up the middle of the field before playing a great pass to the right sideline. Following a nice cross into the box, a scrum in front of the net commenced with Lauren Segalla finding the loose ball and knocking it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, the Mountaineers found themselves again in the offensive zone, this time with a corner kick. Lauren Gilderdale laced a beautiful cross right to a wide open Segalla, who headed the ball in for the game’s second goal.

Housy wasn’t done scoring. Just a few minutes later, the Mountaineers were awarded a free kick in the middle of the field just outside the 18-yard box and Madeline Horosky found the back of the net on a beautiful shot that seemed to curl around the Northwestern defense and into the bottom left corner for the 3-0 lead.

With not many offensive opportunities to speak of in the game so far, Northwestern managed to get themselves back into things when a striker collected the ball inside the box on the left post, cut back across toward the right side and fired a shot that beat goalie Molly Dowd to her right side.

Segalla extended the Housy lead again, collecting the hat trick just minutes before the end of the first half after collecting a ball in the middle of the box and beating the goalie for the 4-1 lead.

Northwestern came out for the second half with a little extra pep in their step and got themselves again to within two goals when Dowd charged a bouncing ball coming into the box, and over-ran it just a bit, allowing a Northwestern player to knock it in the empty net.

Later in the half, Segalla collected her fourth goal on the afternoon with a gorgeous shot from outside the box that beat the keeper high right.

The Mountaineers scored one more goal late in the half for the final score of 6-2.
