Housy soccer off to state tourney

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School boys soccer team earned two wins and a tie in the final week of the regular season.

Housatonic hosted Gilbert Monday, Nov. 2. Like the meeting between these teams earlier in the season, Housatonic controlled much of the game. The first game ended in a 0-0 tie. This game Housatonic scored early and often.

Less than four minutes into the game, Andrew Hoffman scored his first goal off an assist from Mohamed Elserafy. Hoffman found the back of the net again, followed by a goal by Reilly Lynch. Mark Dignacco scored Housatonic’s fourth goal, for a 4-0 halftime score. Following a Gilbert score, Myles Clohessy scored the final goal for Housatonic off an assist from Nick Dignacco, for a final score of 5-1.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Housatonic traveled to Thomaston, who had a record of 10-5. Housatonic continued their strong midfield play to create scoring opportunities, but couldn’t get one in the goal. The energy level of Housatonic continued to improve throughout the game, with Hoffman scoring the first goal of the game from an assist by Elserafy. Thomaston came back later to tie the game. The Housatonic defense stepped up at this point, with Sebastien Lasseur playing large in goal, holding Thomaston to this lone goal. Neither team scored in overtime, so the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The final home game of the season saw Housatonic hosting Oliver Wolcott on Senior Night. Housatonic strung together a third game of great teamwork both offensively and defensively, controlling much of the game. Hoffman scored three goals this game, with two assists going to Elserafy. Josh Allyn, on an assist from Hoffman, scored for Housatonic. Oliver Wolcott scored with under two minutes left, for a final score of 4-1.

Seniors playing their final home game were Steven Bartomioli, Mohamed Elserafy, Colby Pastre, Ryan King, Josh Allyn and Nick Dignacco.

Housatonic ended up with a final record of 7-7-2 for the regular season, qualifying them for the state tournament. They will travel to Coginchaug on Tuesday, Nov. 10, to play in the first round for Class S.
