Housy tennis wins match

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic Valley Regional High School girls varsity tennis team won its second match of the season on Thursday, May 15, as Housatonic topped The Gilbert School, 6-1.Previously the Mountaineers had dropped matches to Litchfield and Northwestern Regional by scores of 7-0 and 6-1, respectively. The results bring the girls overall record to 2-10.In a hard-fought match against rival Gilbert, Laura Craft defeated Bianca Pimentel, 8-5, at number one singles; Jenna Vannicky defeated Caroline Yu, 8-1, at number two singles; Maia Stickles defeated Evey Peng, 8-0, at number three singles; and Marina Matsudaira defeated Victoria Song, 8-1, at number four singles.In the doubles match, Lauren Grayson and Taylor Hurley defeated Mia Wang and Chloe Chen, 8-0, at number one doubles; Sara Qi and Naomi Niu of Gilbert defeated Sophie Mortman and Rebecca Grossman, 8-6, at number two doubles; and Julia Gawel and Sofia Christinat defeated Sally Meng and Doris Yang.In a tough match against Litchfield on Wednesday, May 14, Sabrina Cofer defeated Craft, 8-0, at number one singles; Lauren Tourtellotte defeated Vanicky, 8-0, at number two singles; Maeve Kavle beat Stickles, 8-1, at number three singles; and Tiffany D’Andrea defeated Ashley Coon, 8-0, at number four singles.In doubles, Elena Kennedy and Margaret Hill defeated Matsudaira and Hope Morse, 8-0, at number one doubles; Claire Chapman and Maddie Chapman defeated Grayson and Hurley, 8-1, at number two doubles; and Sophie McDonald and Corinne Casali defeated Sophie Mortman and Rebecca Grossman, 8-0, at number three doubles.

The school's girls and boys teams were named league champions after finishing the regular season with the best win/loss records. Winning the tournaments earned each team a plaque and added to the program's success in 2025.

Día de los Muertos marks a bittersweet farewell for Race Brook Lodge

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
