Ian Thomas Alves

SALISBURY — Ian Thomas Alves, 16, grandson of George F. Griebel of Salisbury and Indian Lake, N.Y., passed peacefully on Dec. 7, 2012, at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, N.D. He had been undergoing continuous treatments and surgeries at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and the RMCC in Fargo, for nearly two years in his courageous struggle to overcome double, terminal cancers. Ian was born on Dec. 28, 1995, in Waterbury, to Lise and John Alves. When Ian was 3 years old, the Alves family relocated to the Fargo area where Ian attended West Fargo schools.Ian enjoyed spending summer and winter vacation time at Indian Lake. He loved the outdoors and nature, camping, animals and the Adirondack way of life.Ian loved running and was a proud member of the West Fargo High School cross-country and track teams. He was also a 4-year participant in tae kwon do martial arts and had earned his black belt. Ian enjoyed skating and played junior team ice hockey for several seasons. His interests also included dramatics and he was a member of the WFHS Gamers Club. He was an avid reader and a high achiever scholastically.He is survived by his mother, Lise, and his brother, Sean, both of Horace, N.D.; his grandfather, George Griebel, and Catherine Bauer, both of Indian Lake; his grandmother, Carol Kennedy of Plano, Texas; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, John, in 2006; his grandparents, Charlotte Collin-Griebel, Stephen Kennedy and Leonel and Maria Alves.A prayer and memorial service was held Dec. 11 at the Community Presbyterian Church in West Fargo. The funeral was held in Fargo at the First Presbyterian Church on Dec. 12, followed by a gravesite service at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo.Memorial donations may be made in Ian’s honor to the Indian Lake Boys Ice Hockey Team, c/o Tim Pine; or the Indian Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 39, Indian Lake, NY 12842.

NORTH CANAAN — A recount held Monday, Nov. 10, at Town Hall confirmed Democrat Jesse Bunce’s narrow victory over incumbent First Selectman Brian Ohler (R) in one of the tightest races in town history.

“A difference of two votes,” said recount moderator Rosemary Keilty after completing the recanvass, which finalized the tally at 572 votes for Bunce and 570 for Ohler.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
