Interim HVRHS principal hired

FALLS VILLAGE — Housatonic Valley Regional High School will have a new interim principal Monday, Oct. 18.

The hiring of Herbert Tedford III was announced at a special meeting of the Region One Board of Education Thursday, Oct. 7.

Tedford will be paid $500 per day for approximately 162 days, with no benefits.

Jonathan Moore, representing Kent on the regional board, was on the search committee. He described Tedford as “a strong candidate whom everybody liked. The committee was unanimous in recommending Tedford, who served as associate principal of Hudson (N.Y.) High School and assistant principal at Pitts Middle School in Pueblo, Colo.

Tedford has a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and biology from the University of Southern Colorado, a Master of the Arts degree in Special Education from Adams State College (Alamosa, Colo.), and an administrative degree from the University of Phoenix.

The Region One Board unanimously approved Tedford’s hiring. Superintendent Patricia Chamberlain said the next order of business is to find an interim assistant principal to relieve Dave Bayersdorfer, who took the job on a temporary basis just prior to the start of the  school year.

Housatonic Principal Gretchen Foster and Assistant Principal Mary Ann Buchanan both resigned in early August. Bayersdorfer,  a recently retired social studies teacher and former athletic director, agreed to take on the job of interim assistant principal.

His temporary job pays $485.22 a day, includes no benefits and runs from Aug. 27 to Jan. 21, 2011 — or until an assistant principal is hired.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
