Joan B. Sucato

MILLERTON — Joan B. Sucato of Millerton, 74, died March 3, 2015, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, after a long battle with cancer.Born Dec. 21, 1940, in St. Regis Falls, N.Y., she was the daughter of Beatrice (Servant) and Casper Palmer.Joan worked many years as an aide at the Wassaic Developmental Center.She is survived by a son, Timothy LaValley and his wife, Courtney, of Gallatin, N.Y.; a daughter, Stacy Phynne and her husband, Kevin, of Georgia; her brothers, Gregory Palmer of Arizona and Randal Palmer of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and many loving great-grandchildren.A memorial service was held at the North East Baptist Church in Millerton on March 7. Arrangements are under the care of the Peck and Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605. The school's girls and boys teams were named league champions after finishing the regular season with the best win/loss records. Winning the tournaments earned each team a plaque and added to the program's success in 2025.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
