Kathleen A. Spenard

Wingdale — Kathleen A. Spenard, 85, a lifelong resident of Dover, died Dec. 11, 2009, at home in a fire. She was the wife of John H. Spenard, who also died in the fire. They were married on June 11, 1950, in Amenia.  

Mrs. Spenard was the executive secretary to the Dover Union Free School District superintendent for more than 30 years before retiring in 1999.  

She was born Jan. 1, 1924, in Dover Plains, the daughter of the late Mary and James E. Yeno.  

She was a graduate of the Kressler Business Institute and attended Dutchess Community College, both in Poughkeepsie.  Following her graduation from Krissler Business Institute, she worked at the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in Wingdale where she met her husband, John.  

Mrs. Spenard was a past president of the Dutchess County Educational Secretaries Association. She had been a school tax collector and taught typing and sewing.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 1949 in Wingdale and had been a 4-H leader, a secretary of the South Dover Rural Cemetery Association in Wingdale, and a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Dover Plains, N.Y.

She is survived by a son, James Spenard of New York City; two daughters, Kathleen Ingerson of Portland, Ore., and Elizabeth Hobby of Ashley Falls, Mass.; five grandchildren; three brothers, James and Joseph Yeno of Van Nuys, Calif., and John Yeno of Wolcott, Conn.; and two sisters, Ann Pruner of Dover Plains and Dorothy Butts of LaGrange.  

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Yeno Webb and Veronica Pultz.  

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains.  

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church.  

Burial will follow at South Dover Rural Cemetery in Wingdale.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
