Kent gets jazzed up during three-day festival

KENT — No matter who played it or how it was played, all jazz was hot jazz at the three-day Litchfield Jazz Festival — temperatures were anywhere from 75 degrees to more than 80 degrees during those three days.

“Whoa, it is hot, hot, hot! Leny Andrade said during her performance with the Trio Da Paz. “It is hot, just like me!

The festival, which started on Friday, July 31, and ended on Sunday, Aug. 2, was held at the Kent School for the first time this year.

While Friday night’s performances featuring Lewis Nash and Jane Monheit was without problems, rain overnight forced Saturday’s main stage performances to be held at the school’s hockey rink.

The 14th annual festival brought together world class performers from all over the globe, including The Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans, Dafnis Prieto from Cuba, Trio Da Paz from Brazil, Wycliffe Gordon from Georgia and Lionel Loueke from West Africa.

The festival also featured a tent for students of the Litchfield Jazz Camp, who performed throughout the day.

Organizers estimate that more than 2,000 people attended the festival each day.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
