Kent School takes hard loss to Taft, 12-4

KENT — It was a tough home game for the Kent School varsity baseball team Wednesday, May 5, as the Taft School left the field with a 12-4 victory in seven innings.

In the first inning, senior Jacob Jablonski of Gales Ferry, Conn., hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run for Kent. Taft answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Kent’s David Harnett of Brooklyn, N.Y., went two for four, and Matt Lambrecht of Stuart, Fla., had two deep doubles to center field.

In the fourth inning, Taft scored eight runs while holding Kent to only one.

Nick Radcliffe of Randolph, Mass., was the Kent starting pitcher and threw 84 pitches in four innings with two strikeouts. Connor Smith of Groton, Mass., relieved him in the fifth inning and threw 40 pitches with one strike out for the rest of the game.

Michael Martinez of Hamburg, N.Y., was the starting catcher and was relieved by Stephan Michalek of Richmond, Texas.

Christine Drpich, the team’s manager and a senior on the Kent diving team, said the first time Kent played Taft it was a much closer game.

“I think they got lucky today,� she said. “We had a rained-out practice yesterday.�

Kent’s next game is at home Wednesday, May 12. They will host The Hotchkiss School at 2:30 p.m. The Kent team is now 4-6 for the season with four games remaining.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
