Kristina Rosita (Magnusson) Wells

NORTH CANAAN — Kristina Rosita (Magnusson) Wells, “Mormor�, 66, of Wangum Village, died Nov. 20, 2009, after a strong battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her four loving children. She was born March 14, 1943, in Sweden and came to the United States in 1960.

She enjoyed collecting lighthouses and penguins. She loved the ocean and camping with her family. She also enjoyed bowling and bingo. She was a past member of the Canaan Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. Kristina  stayed connected with her Swedish heritage as the secretary of the Trollhattan Club.

She was like a mother to many people, a loving, kind woman who always had a big smile on her face.

Kristina is survived by her loving children,  Erik O.F. Schutz and his wife, Debbie, of Sheffield, Tina Schutz of North Canaan, Suzanne Schutz of Egremont, Marie Burr and her husband, Rick, of Clinton, Conn., and Jean Wells of Maryland; her grandchildren, Joshua Tyler, Courtney Schutz, Erika Schutz, Christian Schutz, Sara Burr, Sean Burr, Neil Jamieson and Ricky Jamieson; her two brothers, Sune and Jan-Olaf, who live in Sweden; and her sister, Britt Ormsbee of Sheffield.

She was predeceased by her brother, Kent, of Sweden; and her parents, Olaf and Britta Magnusson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 28,  at 11 a.m. in the North Canaan Congregational Church, East Canaan.  There are no calling hours.  Memorial donations may be sent to North Canaan Volunteer Ambulance or Berkshire Community Action in Great Barrington.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

Día de los Muertos marks a bittersweet farewell for Race Brook Lodge

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
