At the peak of Friday night’s torrential rain storm a power line break on Valley Road required a fire truck to stand by until HELCO men could come and repair the damage. The siren sounded the alert ... but then kept on sounding. Nothing any of the men at the Lakeville fire house did seemed to help. The siren kept on howling. At about 1 a.m. Stewart and Ann Hoskins of the Journal, thinking that either a state of world emergency was being declared or the siren itself was on fire, came down to investigate. With the Journal office keys they were able to provide access to the building so the firemen could turn off the main switch and gain temporary silence while they investigated the trouble.
