Litchfield Stops Gilbert Streak

The Litchfield boys basketball team came to Winsted Tuesday night prepared to run and press all night and they did just that en route to a 66-51 victory over the previously unbeaten Yellowjackets.

For three-quarters of the game the two teams played on even terms. when the fourth quarter started the Jackets held a 40-37 lead. Litchfield came out to start the third period and immediately increased the lead to double digits, 35-25, before the Jackets responded. Junior guard Jim Bunel caught fire and led the Jackets on a 15-2 run that gave the Jackets the lead going into the final period.

The Cowboys had plenty of fuel left in the tank, however, and immediately regained control of the game as the fourth period got under way. Gilbert, clearly running on reserve, became unraveled against the Cowboys’ relentless pressure and finally ran out of gas as Litchfield ran away with the win.

Bunel led the Jackets with 22 points, 18 of which came in the second half, while Sam Serafini and Adam Vaccari chipped in with eight points each. The loss dropped the Jackets into a first-place tie with Litchfield, both teams sporting a record of 7-1.

The Jackets captured three of their five matches during the course of the meet. Junior Alex Senetcky and freshman Ross Lopardo were both four of five in their matches, while Marshall Dean won three of his four. James Dombrowski was also three of four, while Jesse Keslow picked up three wins in five matches.

Jackets Defeat Shepaug, 66-52

The Gilbert boys basketball team passed its third major test Jan. 5 by wearing down a determined Shepaug team, 66-52. With the victory, Gilbert improved to 7-0 in Berkshire League play.

The Spartans gave the Jackets all they could handle for nearly three periods before the depth of Gilbert proved too much for the visitors. Shepaug came out pressing from the beginning and it paid dividends early in the period. Gilbert didn’t take too long to get up to speed and by the end of the period the Jackets found themselves leading, 15-10.

Lesser teams may have folded but Shepaug was prepared to slug it out with the Jackets. Shepaug’s efforts were rewarded as the team crept to within three points, 31-28, at the half.

The third period started the way the second period ended, with end-to-end action, but by midway into the quarter, the Gilbert depth began paying dividends. The Jackets, who have no problem going nine deep into the bench, were quite willing to play end-to-end basketball with the Spartans and by the end of the third period had stretched their lead to seven, 43-36.

In what proved to be a decisive move by Gilbert coach Mark Douglass, the Jackets changed defenses in the fourth period, going from man-to-man to a zone. The intent of the change was to shut down Shepaug guard Gene McAward (17 points), and it worked. The Jackets went on to their highest-scoring quarter of the game, ringing up 23 points to pull away and pick up a very important win.

Senior center Sam Serafini was outstanding for the Jackets, as was junior guard Jim Bunel. Serafini shared game honors by scoring 17 points and was outstanding on the boards, picking up 14 rebounds. Bunel added 13 points, but 11 assists, many coming in the fourth period, were pivotal in the win.

Senior Guard Jeff Albanesius added 11 points for the Jackets.

The Northwestern boys basketball team broke away in the fourth period to defeat Wamogo Jan. 5 at Northwestern.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 27-19 halftime lead and, following a closely contested third period, went on to outscore the Warriors 18-9 in the fourth period.

Senior guard John Griffey led the Highlanders with 14 points, while Kyle Case and Josh Seibold each added 11 points.

With the win, Northwestern improved to 3-4 in the Berkshire League.

Shepaug Defeats Gilbert, 40-27

The Shepaug girls basketball team improved to 8-1 with a hard-fought win over Gilbert Jan. 5 at the Gilbert gym.

The Lady Jackets gave the league-leading Spartans all they could handle in a low-scoring first half, but ran out of gas in the second half.

Brittany Smyth led the Jackets with 10 points, while Stephanie Jones added eight. With the loss, the Jackets dropped to 4-5 in Berkshire League play.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”
