A Little Baroque, A Lot of Jazz

If you’d like to try a new folk remedy for all the colds that have been going around, a little dose of Winterpills might just be the thing. This folk-pop group from Northampton sings thoughtful, moody lyrics by Philip Price who accompanies himself on piano and guitar, along with percussion, keyboard and vocals from his companions. They’ll all be at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington on Friday, Jan. 23, at 9 p.m. Hear their newest album, “Central Chambers,†with echoes of the Byrds, along with more newfangled beats and textures, online at www.winterpills.org. At the new Infinity Hall in Norfolk on Jan. 24, it’s the McDonald Teague Band with a blend of blues, funk and roots music that ought to warm up the coldest feet in the house. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets run from $12 to $27. On Sunday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m., there will be a classical guitar extravaganza as part of the Norfolk Festival’s winter series. And on Friday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m., there will be an explosion of rock and blues with James Montgomery, Brian Simpson and special guest J. Geils. Tickets $25-40. Call 866-666-6306.

Or if you’re in a baroque mood, the New England Baroque Soloists will be performing music by Bach, Telemann and Heinichen at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury on Jan. 24 at 5 p.m.

At The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, veteran guitarist and composer Michael Musillami kicks off the winter schedule with his flagship ensemble, the Musillami Trio, and several other jazz greats in a lively performance on Friday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m., in Elfers Hall.

This free concert includes bassist Joe Fonda and George Schuller on the drums. Joining the group for the performance will be three of the New York jazz scene’s most respected performers: multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich, trumpeter Ralph Alessi and vibraphonist Matt Moran.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
