'Magnificent Seven' move on

FALLS VILLAGE — “The Magnificent Seven, the members of the eighth-grade class of 2009 at the Lee H. Kellogg School, graduated Monday evening, June 15.

The program included vocal and flute performances by Breanna Fallon (one of the Seven) and a slide show of the students throughout their Kellogg career.

As she presented the Faculty Award to John Haddon (the latter valiantly attempting not to grin), Principal Maria Bulson (who gave the group their nickname) said, “Remember, all the teachers voted on you.

And teacher Paula Rogers got a laugh when she said, “It’s payback time — the recipients have to come up and squirm while I say lovely things about them.

“I’m wary of trophies, said teacher Joseph Markow as he presented awards in math and science. “They make excellent dust collectors. Treat them as a visual reminder as you face new challenges that you can do it.

In keeping with tradition, each graduate was presented with a copy of the book, “The Little Engine That Could.

Michael Hodgkins, on hand to hear his daughter sing with the school chorus, said, “This school does an incredible job with the kids.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
