Margaret C. Cayouette

GALLATIN, N.Y. — Margaret C. Cayouette, 69, passed away Aug. 23, 2009, at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany, N.Y. She was the wife of Roger J. Cayouette, whom she married on Dec. 13, 1957, in Astoria, N.Y.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1939, in Astoria, the daughter of the late Mary (Dennis) and Charles Levandi.  

Mrs. Cayouette worked in the accounting department for Astoria Federal Savings and Loans Bank.   

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by three daughters, Janine Janos and her husband, Chris, of Flushing, N.Y., Denise Weaver and her husband, Drew, of Gallatin and Michele Steigerwald and her husband, Johnny, of White Stone, N.Y.; a sister, Helen Harcourt of Kingman, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Mallory Weaver, Jonathan Janos, Jason Janos, Corey Weaver and Christine Janos.

Arrangements are under the care of the Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains.

Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home, Pine Plains. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, at St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church in Copake Falls, N.Y., the Rev. Gary Gelsenbein officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
