Mary Margraf

SANDISFIELD, Mass. — Mary Margraf, 73, died July 20, 2010. She was the widow of Raymond Woodard.

Born in Sandisfield, Mass., on March 26, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Fanny and Gustin Hamilton. She remained a resident of Sandisfield throughout her 73 years.

She offered friendship, smiles and all forms of love to her children, grandchildren and any person she touched. She loved to grow flowers, go shopping, cook, and most of all, spend time with family, friends and her beloved dogs, Zoey and Teddy.

She is survived by four daughters, Barbara Hotchkiss and her husband, Jay, of Sandisfield, Tina Thompson and her husband, Junior, of West Charleston, Vt., Terry Lacasse and her husband, Tim, of Colebrook and Robin Wilcox and her husband, John, of Sandisfield; four sons, James Margraf of Manchester, N.H., Danny Margraf and his partner, Sara Davis, of Otis, Mass., Allan Margraf and his wife, Francky, of Chester Mass., and Jody Margraf and his wife, Shannon, of Otis; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Bobby-Jo Ratigan.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Sandisfield Cemetery in Sandisfield. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted, has care of the arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
