Mastalia at The Moviehouse

The Moviehouse will present a lecture and reception on Saturday, July 26, at 5 p.m., in conjunction with the closing of the exhibition “ORGANIC: Farmers & Chefs of the Hudson Valley – The Photographs of Francesco Mastalia.”Mastalia will talk about the antique wet plate collodion process used to create the images in his portfolio. The lecture will be followed by a reception. Topics covered will include:• The making of the “ORGANIC” project and what goes into working on a long-term project.• Photographic history and why the wet plate collodion process was invented.• A step-by-step guide through the process of creating images on glass plates.• Why Mastalia chose the wet plate collodion process over other photographic processes.• Working with antique lenses.Tickets are $10 per person and include the lecture and reception. Advance box office or online purchase is required.Mastalia has traveled the world photographing tribal, religious, spiritual and indigenous people. His book, “DREADS,” published by Workman Artisan, is a photo documentary on the history of dreadlocks that Mastalia traveled to Ethiopia, Kenya, Angola, Namibia, Senegal, India, Japan, New Zealand, Jamaica and throughout the United States to create. “DREADS” is now in its eighth printing, it is published worldwide in four languages, and includes an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker. To create the images for “ORGANIC,” Mastalia embarked upon a 17,000-mile journey through the Hudson Valley, and photographed more than 100 of its farmers and chefs. The exhibition, which is currently on display in the Studio Gallery at The Moviehouse, 48 Main St., closes on July 26, after a three-month run; it includes 40 of these images along with a personal narrative by each subject.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
