Meetings of BOS will now be taped

CORNWALL — Meetings of the Board of Selectmen are being videotaped now. The first to be recorded was Nov. 18.

The hope is that they will be broadcast on Cablevision and posted on the town website, and that people who can’t or would rather not attend meetings can keep up with the ongoing business of the town.

The inaugural tape is currently on YouTube, but not filed under a searchable name. A link is in the “What’s New” section at www.cornwallct.org.

Videographer Richard Griggs brought two cameras to the meeting and worked hard to get a good audio recording. It was not easy, in part because of a loud  furnace blower. There are actually four videos posted, in an effort to offer usable results. Griggs will work on improvements.

This is a grassroots effort by citizens toward a public that participates more and is better informed about town governance and performance of town officials.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
