Memorial Day observances

HARLEM VALLEY — The following are local Memorial Day parades and observances:

Amenia

The town of Amenia’s Memorial Day Ceremony and Veteran’s Parade will take place on Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Fountain Square at M&T Bank, 4958 Route 22. The parade will step off at 10:45 a.m. with the ceremony to follow at Fountain Square.

This event is sponsored by VFW Post 5444.

In case of rain, the parade will be canceled and the ceremony will be held at the Amenia Town Hall gymnasium, at 4988 Route 22.

Dover

The parade, hosted by American Legion Post 1949, will step off at 9:30 a.m. and march to South Dover Cemetery at Nellie Hill Road. The guest speaker is Dover Councilman Redmond Abrams Jr.

In case of inclement weather,  the ceremony will take place at the JH Ketchum Dover firehouse at 3133 Route 22.

Millbrook

A parade and ceremony, hosted by Millbrook VFW Post 9008, will take place on Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m. The parade will start at the Thorne Building and march down Franklin Avenue to the Tribute Garden, where a ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. 

The guest speaker is Army Col. Lisa Shay, retired. 

In case of rain, the parade is canceled and the ceremony will be at Millbrook High School, 70 Church St. 

Millerton

American Legion Post 178 will conduct a brief Repass Ceremony on Monday, May 27, at each community cemetery beginning at the Post at 6 a.m. The Post will then proceed to Spencer’s Corners Cemetery, Winchell Mountain Cemetery, North East Center Cemetery, Coleman Station Cemetery, Irondale Cemetery (Old Veterans Plot), and St. Patrick’s Cemetery. At each location the Post will conduct a flag raising, play taps and fire a rifle salute to the deceased. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Memorial Day parade and ceremony will begin at the firehouse at 24 Century Blvd. at 10 a.m. From there the parade will proceed to Irondale Cemetery for a brief ceremony before it concludes at Veterans Park at corner of Main Street and Dutchess Avenue, where the main ceremony will take place. 

The speaker will be Col. Todd Bookless, commander of the 53rd Digital Liaison Detachment, U.S. Army.

In the event of inclement weather, a weather call will be made by 8 a.m. Monday. Check the Post website at www.legionpost178.org or the Post Facebook/Twitter page for cancellation announcements.

Pine Plains

The parade, hosted by Shekomeko American Legion Post 426 and Pine Plains VFW Post 5519, will step off from Pine Plains Hose Company firehouse at 10:30 a.m. and march up South Main Street to the clock tower at the center of town where a ceremony will take place. The parade will then march up North Main Street to the Evergreen Cemetery for prayers, the laying of a wreath and a 21 gun salute ceremony. It will then travel down North Main Street to a flag raising at the American Legion and VFW Posts.

In case of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled and only the salute at the cemetery will take place.

Stanford

A parade hosted by Leroy Campell American Legion Post 1793 will step off from the Stanford Grange Route 82 and proceed to the Bangall Monument at Hunns Lake Road where a ceremony will take place. 

The speaker will be the commander of Legion Post 1793, who will honor Navy Cryptologist Shannon Kent, who was killed in an Isis suicide attack in Syria. The Bangall Historic Post Office will be open and is offering refreshments for all.

In case of inclement weather, just a wreath will be placed at the monument.

Early morning Kent crash sends car into ditch, disrupts traffic on Rt. 341

A blue SUV remains in a ditch after an early-morning crash along Segar Mountain Road in Kent May 27.

KENT – A driver escaped with minor injuries after an SUV crashed into a utility pole and water line before rolling into a ditch along Segar Mountain Road early Wednesday morning, May 27, disrupting traffic for much of the day and affecting water service to a nearby residence.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. near 36 Segar Mountain Road, just under half a mile east of the intersection with South Kent Road. State police said the blue SUV struck the pole, went over a guardrail and came to stop in a roadside ditch.

Pauline King Garfield

Pauline King Garfield

EAST CANAAN — Pauline K. (King) Garfield, 94 of 77 South Canaan Rd. formerly of East Canaan, died Sunday May 24, 2026, at Geer Village.She was the wife of the late Duane Garfield who passed August 14, 2017. Pauline was born April 3, 1932 in North Canaan, CT in the former Geer Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Rose (Van Vlack) King.

Pauline spent her career at Becton Dickinson in Canaan, after being a stay-at-home mother for many years.She was employed at Becton Dickinson for 23 years. She enjoyed bus trips with her late husband Duane to the Casinos, spending time with her family watching the grandchildren grow up. Recently she made a comment to care givers that was “wait until I see that husband of mine for leaving me here, I am going to read him the riot act.” Over the years she enjoyed many crafts, but her favorite was crocheting gifts for everyone.

For many pet owners, animals are family. On Saturday, May 30, that bond will be celebrated in a uniquely practical and heartfelt way when the Blessing of the Animals returns to Third Lutheran Evangelical Church in Rhinebeck alongside a free rabies vaccination clinic hosted by Hudson Valley Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

The event, scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., is free for Dutchess County residents and open to dogs, cats and domestic ferrets three months and older. While the clinic itself provides an important public health service, organizers say the day has become about much more than vaccinations.

Filmmaker Yonah Sadeh of Falls Village left May 8 for China, where he will shoot a short documentary.

“I got into a documentary film intensive program where we have two weeks to shoot, edit and screen a 10-minute documentary about a topic of our choosing,” he said.“I’ll be in Changsha, Hunan, making a film about a fifth-generation shadow puppet master.”

Author Courtney Maum to discuss new novel at Norfolk Library

Norfolk Library celebrates the release of Courtney Maum’s latest novel, “Alan Opts Out,” with a book launch party Tuesday, June 2, at 5:30 p.m. The author will speak about her book in conversation with WAMC radio producer Sarah LaDuke.

A graduate of Brown University with a degree in comparative literature, Maum is an acclaimed author of five books, including the romantic comedy “Touch,” a New York Times Editors’ Choice and NPR Best Book of the Year; “Costalegre;” and “I’m Having So Much Fun Without You.” Her memoir, “The Year of the Horses,” was chosen by the TODAY show as top pick for Mental Health Awareness Month. Vanity Fair listed her author’s guidebook “Before and After the Book Deal,” as a best resource for writers, and she has an eponymous Substack newsletter.
