New area code coming to state

NORTHWEST CORNER — A new area code will go into effect starting on Saturday, Aug. 30, for the part of the state currently using the 860 area code. The state’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) announced the additional area code, 959, in early March. In the announcement the authority said existing phone numbers will not change and local calling areas will remain the same.PURA spokesman Michael Coyle said that there will not be a toll imposed for phone calls between 860 and 959 area codes.Coyle said phone numbers for the 860 area code are expected to be exhausted by the end of this year.“The additional area code was driven by the ongoing demand for telephone numbers,” Coyle said. “The demand is not just from traditional landlines, but also from cell phones, pagers, modems, Internet access and other conveniences from modern life. The demand has caused this near exhaustion in the 860 area code. Many people are old enough to remember when a household had one phone number. Now it’s not uncommon for a household to have six to even 10 phone numbers.”Coyle said that each of the current area codes in the state, both 860 and 203, represents 750,000 telephone users.“The existing codes will not change,” he said. “Local calls will remain at the same service price along with long distance calls. Customers will still be able to dial 911 and 211 with the same three digits.” For more information visit www.ct.gov/pura.
