New Year's Eve busy for state troopers

CONNECTICUT — State police had more work than they expected over the New Year’s Eve holiday, as a snow storm began in western Connecticut about 10 a.m. on Dec. 31.

State police responded to hundreds of incidents, including 377 calls for service that included spinouts, vehicles stuck in snow, disabled vehicles, etc.

Troopers investigated 175 crashes that resulted in 11 injuries.

During the storm roads were slippery and many accidents were the result of excessive speed by drivers.

From midnight on Dec. 30 to Jan. 3, 2010, at 8:30 p.m., state police reported a total of 623 accidents, of which three were fatal and 74 resulted in injuries. There were 49 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, 679 arrests for speeding and 69 seatbelt violations. There were 1,295 incidents of hazardous moving, e.g., following too closely, unsafe lane changes and failure to signal.

Polce reminded motorists to exercise caution while traveling in winter conditions.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
