EAST CANAAN - Heavy rains on Sunday, July 9 and Monday, July 10 caused flooding on several vegetable fields at Freund's Farm in East Canaan.

"The water certainly breached the riverbank," said Amanda Freund. "This is the worst flood I have seen in my entire life."

Freund said the total damage was yet to be determined as of July 12, but that she was thankful for the support from other farms in the region.

"This had a real impact on the farmers in our community. We are figuring out what the actual value and scale of that impact is, but we will continue to do what we do and maybe think differently about where we plant our crops next year," said Freund. "Where we aren't achieving the yield or harvest that we anticipated, we have a network with other farms in the community to meet our supply needs."

The brunt of the water effected to two vegetable fields, two high tunnels, and the sweet corn field.

"We literally just planted our pumpkins on Saturday then the flood came through on Monday. It's the nature of the beast," said Freund.

Freund said that despite the setback, business will continue as usual at Freund's Farm Market.

"We will persevere and we will continue to have local products for sale," said Freund.
