Katy Marie Sherwood

Katy Marie Sherwood

NORTH CANAAN — Katy Marie Sherwood was born on May 4, 1984, in Pittsfield, Mass. After fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer, she passed away at home peacefully on Jan. 31, 2021, surrounded by her loved ones.

Katy spent her childhood in Ahoskie, N.C., and North Canaan, where she graduated from North Canaan Elementary School in 1998. She then graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 2002. She worked as a paraprofessional for Region One Pupil Services at North Canaan Elementary School.

Katy is survived by her husband, William A. Sherwood; her children, Jase, Abby and Carter Sherwood; her parents, George and Tonya Roussis and Denise Davenport; her grandmother, Cleo Roussis; her siblings, Peter and Brandi Roussis, Tina and Adam Bunce, Becky and Don Cahill, Stacey and Ryan Mullen, Regina and Jon Hurlburt and Sarah Roussis; her nieces and nephews, Alyssa Roussis, Donnie, Saige and Luna Cahill, Cooper and Annabelle Bunce, Ryan and Liam Mullen, Mason Hurlburt, and Joey, Colin and Jaycob Sherwood; her aunts, Loretta Myers and Anastasia Desjardins; her mother-in-law, Cathy Sherwood; and her sisters-in-law, Jessica Sherwood, Crystal Ohmen and Joy Sherwood.

Katy was predeceased by her grandfather, Peter Roussis; her father-in-law, Bullet Sherwood; and her brother-in-law, Joe Sherwood.

All of these facts about Katy are just that: facts. They don’t come close to telling her story. Katy was a fiercely loving wife and mother. Up until her very last moments, it was Bill and the kids who were utmost on her mind. She was a devoted sister and the best of friends. She was the fun aunt, and the daredevil daughter. She could gossip with the best of them and give dirty looks like no other.

That being said, Katy was a classic middle child who hated confrontation and would do anything she could to avoid it. She was funny and sarcastic, and kept us all laughing even when we just felt like crying. We all knew she was tough, but there aren’t words to describe just how strong she proved to be. She didn’t cry about her situation, and told everyone that there was “no negativity allowed.”

Katy loved shopping and Dunkin’ iced coffees. She could sing every Ja Rule song word-for-word. She loved spending entire days on Twin Lakes with her family. She hated group texts, and we all knew not to expect a response if we included her in one.

Katy had the worst road rage, but was the best highway driver of all time. The term “beat the GPS” was made for Katy.

She loved flip-flops and sunshine, but nothing made her happier than fuzzy blankets. Her biggest pet peeve was unmatched socks.

Katy endured years of relentless teasing over her obsessive love of her childhood stuffed animal, Rainbow, but never cared even one bit.

Katy’s life was cut way too short, but these things that are but glimpses into who she was will never be forgotten by those of us who will always love every single part of her.

Calling hours were held at Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan on Feb. 8.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lakeville on Tuesday, Feb. 9, by invitation only due to COVID.
