One click to year-round farmers market

STANFORDVILLE, N.Y. — The Rusty Tractor online farmers market, up and running for four weeks now, offers area shoppers a way to order local farm foods now that many of the seasonal outdoor markets are closed. The products include baked goods and meats, but not fresh fruits or vegetables.

Rusty Tractor’s founder, Lisa Thomas, describes it as community supported agriculture e-commerce.

On the website, rustytractorfarmmarket.com, locavores can select from more than 150 regionally sourced products, from ground beef to cupcakes; place an order electronically; and pick up everything in a biodegradable jute shopping bag at one location in Stanfordville.

On a recent Saturday morning, baker Karen Roberts showed up with a dozen freshly baked cupcakes to fill one customer’s order. Thomas was putting together a bag with three local cheeses, spinach pappardelle from Mercato, eggs from Thunder Hill Farm, ground beef from Meadowland Farm and a few tubes of bee balm lip salve.

Thomas visits participating food producers each week and picks up their goods, then assembles the individual orders. Orders placed by Wednesday are picked up in Stanfordville on Saturday.

New products, many suggested by customers — such as lamb rosemary sausage fromMountain Products Smokehouse in LaGrangeville — are always being added to the selection.

Thomas is considering offering home delivery, additional pickup times and more distribution sites.

Thomas and her husband, Paul, became weekenders in Stanfordville in 1994 and planned on eventually becoming full-time residents. Ten years ago when their son, Henry, was 2, they made the permanent move to the country.

Thomas, an art historian who had worked at Christie’s auction house in New York City, knew she wanted to do something with food, but didn’t want a store and didn’t want to have to deal with shipping.

Working with Paula Smith, a Millerton graphics designer specializing in food and branding, she created a professional website.

Thomas began the business with no expectations but said she was immediately overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of her customers and vendors.

She personally vets every product on the site and said her favorite part of the business is visiting her suppliers — from farmers in their barns to the beekeeper at Humming Bird Farms — and testing new food items to include on the next week’s shopping list.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
