Paul F. Murray


WINSTED — Paul F. Murray, 89, died Dec. 7, 2008. He was the loving husband of the late Norma (Twist) Murray.

Born April 8, 1919, in North Anson, Maine, he was the son of the late Laura (Inman) and Joseph P. Murray. He was a resident of Winsted since 1962.

Mr. Murray served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was an active member and deacon of the First Assembly of God Church in Torrington. He was active in various Christian ministries and was a member of the Gideons International.

Mr. Murray is survived by his son, Thomas Murray and his wife, Marian, of Maplewood, N.J.; his daughter, Tanis Murray-Finn and her husband, David, of Torrington; and three grandchildren, Annika Murray, Rosalie Murray and Sean Finn.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at noon at the First Assembly of God Church in Torrington. Interment will be held in North Anson, Maine, in the spring. Friends may call on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 11 a.m. to noon at the First Assembly of God Church, Torrington. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, Winsted, has care of the arrangements.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
