Pink's NFL Picks

For the week, 11-5

Pick of the Week, 0-1

Last week’s picks were not a bad start, considering it was the first week of the season. The Colts certainly looked the part of Super Bowl Champions and the Patriots served notice that they are going to be tough to beat.

As for the Giants, the offense looked ready for the Super Bowl while the defense appears headed to the toilet bowl. It just might be that Carolina is back on track and it was nice to see the Lions open with a win.

My pick of the week wasn’t so hot, but I’m sure my crystal ball will clear up as the season progresses. Let’s take a look at this week’s games:

Sunday, Sept. 16

Buffalo at Pittsburgh — Last week, the tough luck Bills lost a heartbreaker while the Steelers looked awesome. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger appears comfortable being more involved in calling plays and I look for the Steelers to continue to play well. I’ll go with Pittsburgh in this one, 21-14.

Cincinnati at Cleveland — The Bengals managed to squeak one out against the Ravens, thanks in part to a bogus interference call that nullified a game-tying touchdown. Cleveland didn’t show much against Steelers, but I like them in this one. Browns, 21-20.

Indianapolis at Tennessee — Not much you can say about the Colts outside of the fact that they looked awesome in their romp of the Saints. Head Coach Jeff Fisher appears to have the Titans playing well and should provide a good test for the Colts. With that said, I still can’t pick anyone but the Colts in this one, 34-21.

Houston at Carolina — Head Coach John Fox has been on the hot seat in Carolina, but if his team continues to play like it did against the Rams, that will change. Houston is coming off an impressive win as well, but I’ll stick with Carolina in this one, 30-17.

San Francisco at St. Louis — The Niners managed a win on Monday night while the Rams were flat against the Panthers. Look for runningback Steven Jackson to come alive for the Rams. I’ll stick with the home team in this one. St. Louis wins handily, 34-21.

Green Bay at New York — If Peyton Manning is healthy for the Giants, they should have enough to handle the Packers at home. Never underestimate Brett Favre and company, but with or without Eli, I still like the Giants in this one, 20-13.

Atlanta at Jacksonville — The Falcons didn’t show much against the Vikings, and Jacksonville was equally unimpressive against the Titans. I look for the Jags to rebound this weekend at home and I’ll make this my Pick of the Week — Jags 20-10.

New Orleans at Tampa — Quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints were totally out of sync against the Colts and can’t afford another letdown against the Bucs. By no means is this a gimme game for New Orleans, but I think they’ll manage to win this one, 24-17.

Minnesota at Detroit — Could it be both of these teams are headed in the right direction? Only time will tell, but I think this should be a good game to watch. I’ll stick with the Lions in a tight one, 27-24.

Dallas at Miami — The Cowboys will be up against a much better defense this week and that should make this game interesting. Miami needs to get its offense in gear and there’s no better place to do it than at home. I’ll take the Dolphins in this one, 17-14.

Seattle at Arizona — The Cards are coming off a tough Monday night road loss while the Seahawks looked solid at home in their win over the Bucs. I never like the Monday night team on the road the following week, so I’m sticking with Arizona in this one, 23-20.

New York Jets at Baltimore — Both of these teams have injury problems at quarterback. As I said earlier, the Ravens were victimized by a bad call Monday night and I expect them to rebound. I’ll stick with Baltimore, 17-10.

Oakland at Denver — This is a great old rivalry and the Oakland defense should keep them in the game for a while. Denver, however, is always tough at home, so I’ll go with the Broncos in this one, 20-7.

Kansas City at Chicago — The Chiefs seem to be in stagger mode already while the Bears are looking to rebound from their opening loss to Chargers. Look for a big effort from the Bears as they cruise in this one, 30-13.

San Diego at New England — It’s hard to imagine a better matchup at this point of the season. The Chargers are real good but everyone, including me, thinks the Patriots are “super. I’ll still with New England’s finest in this one, 34-24.

Monday, Sept. 17

Washington at Philadelphia — This is almost a must-win for the Eagles because they can’t afford to open the season with back-to-back losses. The Redskins are improved, but I don’t see them winning this one. I’ll take the Eagles, 21-14.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
