Pink's NFL Picks : October 23, 2009

Last Week: 7-7; for the season, 57-33

Pick of the Week: 1-0; for the season, 4-1

Talk about some strange games and off-the-wall upsets! Some of last week’s results really have me puzzled. Regardless, I did learn a few things, including that the Redskins are horrible, Tennessee has already packed in their season, and it’s hard to predict what the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jags, Houston Texans and the Seattle Seahawks are going to do from week to week. The Jags were my Lock of the Week, but a three-point win in overtime over the hapless Rams is nothing to write home about.

Enough said. I’m ready for a good week, so here we go.

Sunday, Oct. 25

Green Bay at Cleveland — The Packers defense is showing signs of improvement and that will be bad news for the Browns. QB Aaron Rodgers is a budding star, while Cleveland’s struggles continue on offense. You’ve got to like the Pack in this one, 23-13.

San Diego at Kansas City — The Chargers are struggling a bit and head coach Norv Turner may be on the hot seat. The Chiefs showed some signs on life with road win against the hapless Redskins. I don’t like a team going on the road after losing on Monday night, so I’ll go with the Chiefs in a mild upset, 20-17.

San Francisco at Houston — The 49ers stung me last time out and I haven’t had much luck with the Texans so far this season. I like both teams, and I still think both have a shot at post-season play. The Niners are rested, but I’m still going with the home-standing Texans, 27-20.

Indianapolis at St. Louis — The Rams are coming off their best effort of the season while the Colts had the week off. At this point in the season, it’s hard to pick against the Colts, regardless of who they play. I’ll stick with Indianapolis, 24-13.

Minnesota at Pittsburgh — The Vikings defense fell apart in the fourth quarter against the Ravens and that can’t happen against the Steelers if they expect to win. Big Ben is excelling, their running game has come alive and the defense is getting healthy. I like the Steelers, 24-21.

New England at Tampa Bay — There’s not a lot to say about this game. Brady is playing super for the Pats, while the Bucs are just plain bad. The Bucs might catch the Pats sleeping and actually score, but in the end the Patriots win going away, 34-10.

Buffalo at Carolina — I don’t think either team is a factor in the playoff forcast, but I like the Bills more than Carolina. With that said, I’ll take the Bills in an upset, 17-14.

N.Y. Jets at Oakland — It’s hard to explain the loss by the Jets and the win by the Raiders over the Eagles. I’m not sure about either of these teams, but the game is much more important to the Jets. It’s time the Jets went more to the running game and let their defense do their thing. I’ll take the Jets, 20-17.

Atlanta at Dallas — It looks to me as if the Falcons are for real, while at the same time the Cowboys are a mess. Consider this: The Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, the Redskins’ Daniel Snyder and the Raiders’ Al Davis start a reality show. Maybe then their respective teams can restore themselves to respectable. I like the Falcons, 30-24.

Chicago at Cincinnati — This is a big game for two teams coming off key losses. Both teams have had trouble running the ball, which means the game is in the hands of the Bears’ Jay Cutler and the Bengals’ Carson Palmer, both of whom can be shaky at times. I’m going with the Bengals, 23-20.

New Orleans at Miami — This is an interesting matchup. The Dolphins are coming off their bye week, while the Saints must protect against a letdown after putting a hurt on the Giants. This is a good place for an upset, but I just can’t go against Drew Brees at this point in the season. I’ll take the Saints, 24-17.

Arizona at N.Y. Giants — If there was any doubt about the Giants secondary being their Achilles’ heel, Drew Brees and the Saints took care of that. As for the Cardinals, they have the same type of QB in Kurt Warner and that could spell trouble for the Giants. It would help if the Giant running game got going, which would reduce the time that the defense has to be on the field. In the end, I then Warner and the Cards win this one, 28-20.

Monday, Oct. 26

Philadelphia at Washington — Head coach Jim Zorn is headed for the exit sign and it might be before you read this paper. The Eagles were awful in Oakland and they had better turn it around quickly. I’m just amazed that the Redskins are playing so bad, so I’m going with the Eagles, 20-6.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
