Playscape funds still needed

SHARON — The Sharon Center School PTO has only raised half the funds it needs for a new playground.

Fundraising for the playground started last year, and according to PTO President Marilyn Yerks, $32,000 of the $64,000 for the project has been collected.

The school’s current playground was built in 1993 and is made of wood. The PTO has been working with Childscapes, a playground manufacturer in Marshfield, Mass., to design an all-new playscape.

When the new playground is installed, 71 children will be able to play on it at a time.

It will be made of metal and high-impact plastic and will include a five-swing set, a specially designed handicap swing, two slides and climbing pieces.

“We’re planning another fundraising event in the spring, Yerks said. “The PTO is working hard to raise money for this. We hope to get the new playground up by the end of the school year, in the spring.

To donate to the PTO playground fund, send a check to Sharon Center School PTO Playground Fund, 80 Hilltop Road, Sharon, CT 06069.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
