The power of political cartooning

TORRINGTON — Acclaimed Litchfield County illustrators Marc Simont and Barry Blitt have been tapped by the Litchfield County Writers Project to talk about political cartooning on Monday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m., at UConn’s Torrington branch.Simont, whose work has appeared in this newspaper, is an artist, political cartoonist and illustrator of more than 100 children’s books. His first children’s book was published in 1939.Blitt’s illustrations have appeared on the cover of The New Yorker and in the pages of the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times and Entertainment Weekly. He is the illustrator of “Once Upon a Time, The End (Asleep in 60 Seconds),” by Geoffrey Kloske, as well as several other picture books.Both artists will discuss their work and its impact as a medium in political and environmental events. There will be a book sale and book signings after the discussion. Examples of the illustrators’ work are being exhibited at the campus’ Whitson Gallery from April through September.The Litchfield County Writers Project provides programs that celebrate the creative work of Litchfield County and support the academic aims of the University of Connecticut. The Torrington UConn Co-op carries all the books for LCWP events, available to students and the general public. NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

Love is in the atmosphere

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
