Primary and caucus time is here

Harlem Valley — The Dutchess County primary election is on Thursday, Sept. 10, from noon to 9 p.m. The following information includes candidate races and polling places for applicable municipalities.

Amenia

Incumbent Supervisor Victoria Perotti and Mike DeLango are vying to be on the Republican ticket for town supervisor. For candidate profiles, see Page A4.

Voters in District 1 vote at Immaculate Conception-St. Patrick Parish in Amenia. Voters in District 2 vote at the firehouse in Wassaic. Voters in District 3 vote at the VFW Harlem Valley Post No. 5444 in Dover Plains. 

Dutchess County

Incumbent Dutchess County Legislator Michael Kelsey (R-25) and Sandra Washburn are competing for a place on the Republican ticket for the 25th Legislative District.

The district covers Amenia, Washington, Millbrook and parts of Pleasant Valley.

Amenia polling places are listed above.

All voters in Washington and Millbrook vote at the Millbrook firehouse.

Caucuses

The Millbrook Republican Committee will hold a caucus on Monday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall, to nominate candidates for offices to be voted on in the general election. An unexpired term for village trustee is up for election.

The North East Democratic Committee will hold a caucus on Sunday, Aug. 30, at noon in the NorthEast-Millerton Library Annex to nominate candidates for offices to be voted on in the general election. In the town of North East the following terms are up for election: town supervisor, town councilman (2), town clerk and town justice.

The Washington Republican Committee will hold a caucus on Monday, Aug. 31, at 7:15 p.m. in Town Hall, to nominate candidates for offices to be voted on in the general election. In Washington the following terms are up for election: town councilman (2), town clerk, town  justice and highway supervisor.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
