Prize-winning steer at Big E is from Cornwall

CORNWALL — The Grand Champion steer at the Eastern States Exposition — The Big E — was raised and exhibited by Laine Jurgilewicz of Cream Hill Road in Cornwall.

The steer was later sold for $4 per pound at the annual 4-H Beef Auction on Sept. 27. The 1,280-pounder was purchased by Eastern States Exposition Board Chairman Donald R. Chase, owner of Pennel Hill Farm in Halifax, Vt.

The beef auction is part of a four-day youth program at The Big E . Proceeds go to winning 4-H members, who typically use them to fund 4-H projects and education.

The Big E is a multi-state agricultural fair. This year’s fair was held from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3.

Jurgilewicz is a 2010 graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
