Prizes awarded to students for fire safety posters

SALISBURY — Emily Sullivan was the town winner for this year’s Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster contest. Fire Marshall Michael Fitting presented a $200 savings bond to Emily and a $100 bond to runner-up Annika Oostenink.

“It was a difficult contest to judge, said Fitting. “We had to vote a couple of times for the second-place winner.

But everybody who participated in the contest is a winner, he added.

“And remember, if there’s a fire, don’t try and be a hero. That’s the fire fighters’ job.

“Get everybody out and call 911.

Emily’s poster now goes up against other towns’ entries in a county-wide contest; two county winners from the fourth and fifth grades will be announced Feb. 2, and a state winner will be chosen from that group.

The state winner’s poster will be used as part of fire prevention promotions throughout the state; the state winner gets a $1,000 savings bond.

The contest is a cooperative effort of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Connecticut Fire Marshal’s Association, the Connecticut Fire Chief’s Association, the state Board of Education and the Connecticut FAIR Plan (representing the insurance industry).
