Railroad Days from July 6 to 17

NORTH CANAAN — As the first weeks of summer come to a close, North Canaan’s Railroad Days celebration is quickly approaching. From July 6 to 17, events will be happening across the town, lasting from early morning to late evening.

Activities and events are available to people of all ages and interests, from historical presentations to children’s story hours, raffles and bake sales.

Throughout its 10-day run, Railroad Days will feature events at both important North Canaan landmarks such as the Douglas Library (which is celebrating its 195th birthday this year) and new local businesses such as Plantin’ Seeds, which will be hosting the Railroad Days Kick-off Cocktail Party on July 6.

Besides the all-day events, one of the most enjoyed parts of Railroad Days, the North Canaan Carnival, will continue through July 9 every evening from 6 to 10 p.m. The carnival, which attracts children and adults alike, features rides, games and food.

Railroad Days traditionally concludes with a free fireworks show. This year, the fireworks will be set off on Saturday, July 16, at 9 p.m. According to the Railroad Days website (www.canaanrailroaddays.com), the best location to view them is Lawrence Field.

As Railroad Days comes to a close on Sunday, July 17, it will wrap up with one last Northwest Corner tradition: the Canaan Railroad Days Road Race. Athletes of all ages can participate in the 5-mile run-and-walk, 1-mile kids run or 2-mile walk. The event is put on with the help of the Northwestern Connecticut YMCA and will start at 9 a.m.
