Richard "Dick" J. Killmer Sr.


WASSAIC - Richard "Dick" J. Killmer Sr., of Hickory, N.C., formerly of Wassaic, died Jan. 19, 2008, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. On May 7, 1955, he married Faye J. Haskin, the love of his life, who survives.

Mr. Killmer was born July 8, 1934, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of Margaret (Eckerline) and James W. Killmer.

Mr. Killmer was a lifetime member of the Wassaic Fire Company; he was active for 52 years, and chief for several of those years. He was named Citizen of the Year for the town of Amenia in 1984. He was involved with the community, and with the Boy Scouts, for several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Daniel R. Killmer and his companion, Marta Weiss, of Wassaic, Richard Killmer Jr. and his companion, Bonita Boone, of Wingdale and Kenneth Killmer and his companion, Amy McCaull, of Pine Plains; his daughters, Susan Duncan of Hickory, N.C., Pamela Killmer of Amenia, N.Y., and Sherry Barton and her husband, Richard, of Hickory; his grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, Lucas, Kerrie and Randy Killmer, Percy and Jeremey Duncan, Tonya Smith, Fred Richards, Billyjack and Travis Hubert, Alicia Matias, Cody and Reanne Suzedelis, Carrie Duncan, Autumn and Jesse Killmer, Joshua, Zachery, McKenzie,Calab and Jarrett Killmer; his great-grandchildren; his brothers, James Killmer and his wife, Ynes, and Edward Killmer, both of Amenia; his sisters, Beverly and her husband, Robert Boyles Sr., and Helen Harrod, both of Wassaic, and Joan Dietter and her husband, Elwood, of Millerton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Vincent Killmer Sr.; a sister, Marion Delaney; and his nephews, William Becker III and Vincent Jr.

Mr. Killmer touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at the Wassaic Fire House on Jan. 26 between 4 and 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Wassaic Fire Company or the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
