Robert O'Leary


NORTH CANAAN — Robert "Bob" O’Leary, 58, of West Main Street, died Feb. 5, 2007, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Jeannette (Migliore) O’Leary, whom he married in 2002, and the late Patricia Ann (Taylor) O’Leary, who died in 1999.

Mr. O’Leary was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Elizabeth L. (Henig) O’Leary of Mays Landing, N.J., and the late John C. O’Leary.

He was a teacher. He began his career in New York City as a math and science teacher, then moved to North Canaan and for 28 years was the math teacher in the middle school at Salisbury Central School. He retired in 2005.

Mr. O’Leary earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1971 from Queens College, a masters degree from Adelphi University in 1975, and a Sixth Year Professional Diploma of Advanced Studies in Administration-Supervision in 1988 from Southern Connecticut State University.

In addition to teaching in the classroom, he loved to coach. While at Salisbury Central School, he coached basketball, soccer and softball for many years. Recently, he had been the coach of the ski team at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village.

He was a member and chairman of the North Canaan Board of Education and volunteered with the Northwest Connecticut Lions Club. Mr. O’Leary was also a member of the National Education Association and was named in "Who’s Who in Education."

In addition to his wife and his mother, Mr. O’Leary is survived by his two sons, Sean P. O’Leary of Ashland, N.H., and Collin M. O’Leary of Burlington, Vt.; his daughter, Bridget C. O’Leary of Jeffersonville, Vt.; three stepchildren, Craig, Eric and Kristine Whiting, all of North Canaan; two brothers, John "Jack" O’Leary of Princeton Junction, N.J., and Thomas O’Leary of Stoneybrook, N.Y.; Elizabeth Wegner of Mays Landing, N.J., and Mary Margaret Tamargo of Massapequa Park, N.Y.; a grandson, Grady J. O’Leary of Ashland; and a step-grandson, Tucker A. Whiting of North Canaan.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the North Canaan Congregational Church in East Canaan. A reception will follow after in the Pilgrim House, 30 Granite Ave., North Canaan. There are no calling hours.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield
