Saperstein’s remains on the market: Going out of business sale will last till inventory is gone

MILLERTON— Back in July, 2017, Lewis Saperstein announced that the store bearing his name would be closing at the end of the year. He put Saperstein’s up for sale — both the business and the property. As of yet, he hasn’t found a buyer, though there’s been interest, he said.

And while the New Year has come and gone, Saperstein’s is just now starting a going out of business sale, which will run until his inventory is depleted.

“People are stocking up because they don’t know if they’ll be able to find what I have here anyplace else,” he said, noting sales have been brisk.

The store isn’t closing because of bad business, but because Saperstein is tired of doing the same thing he’s been doing since 1977. He officially purchased the business from his father in 1999.

“I’m looking forward to retiring,” he said. “I just want to try different things, maybe take some courses. I’d like to learn how to fly a plane and take up karate, and just do nothing if I don’t want to do anything.”

The longtime Millerton merchant lives in Pleasant Valley, and is also looking forward to not having to make the 58-mile round trip daily commute.

As for potential buyers, Saperstein said the Main Street building is up for sale for $600,000; the business is for sale for $275,000.

“If someone is interested in the business, I’d negotiate,” said Saperstein. “Right now it’s at $275,000, which is a very good price, and my expertise goes with it.”
