Seven Region One boards of ed

The Region One School District includes the six towns of Canaan (Falls Village), Cornwall, North Canaan, Kent, Sharon and Salisbury. Each town has its own elementary school and its own board of education. The six towns share the regional high school, Housatonic Valley Regional High School, and the Region One Board of Education.Until recently, Region One board members were appointed by the town boards. Falls Village was the first town to choose to elect its representative in the bi-annual municipal elections. Other towns followed suit and now the only two that still appoint are Cornwall and Kent. Towns pay for their schools from their municipal budget and spending plans are approved annually in a town meeting vote. Regional education costs are shared and are approved by taxpayers in a regionwide machine vote. Each town contributes to the cost of running the school district (which includes the high school, the Regional Schools Services Center (which includes the office of the regional superintendent) and Pupil Services, which includes special education. Costs are divided based on the number of children from each town who attend the schools each year, based on attendance in the prior October (costs for the 2012 fiscal year, beginning July 1, will be calculated based on the number of regional students as of October 2011). Votes of members on the regional school board are “weighted,” based on the number of children each town has in the school district and how much money each is contributing toward the budget. The weighted votes can be found at the school district’s website, www.region1schools.org.The chairmen of the six town boards of education and the chairman of the regional board meet regularly as a group called the All Boards Committee.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
