SOARing with Disney songs

LAKEVILLE — SOAR (Seek, Originate, Aspire, Reach), the enrichment program at Salisbury Central School, presented “The Wonderful World of Disney: A Musical Revue” on Nov. 15 and 16 in the school cafeteria (which has a small curtained stage at one end).

The show began with Michael Berkeley playing “The Wonderful World of Color” on electric piano while the cast members ran into the cafeteria, past the audience, while singing the song.

They assembled onstage and went into a medley of “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”

The show then proceeded chronologically by decade, starting with the 1930s (represented by “Heigh Ho” and “Someday My Prince Will Come” from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”) up to the current decade, with “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” from “Frozen.”

The finale was “Rainbow Connection” from “The Muppet Movie.”

The show was fast-moving and employed minimal props, instead concentrating on solo and duet performances.

Prior to the start, David Valcin asked the audience and performers if they were willing to wait a few minutes after the show to take a photo in support of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) research — and specifically to support Eric Stevens, a young man diagnosed with the disease.

So after the finale a big banner with Stevens’ photo and bearing the legend “#axeALS” was brought to the stage and everyone crowded around for a photo. (For more information go to www.stevensnation.com).

When the guide gets it wrong

Rosa setigera is a native climbing rose whose simple flowers allow bees to easily collect pollen.

Dee Salomon

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
