Storm’s measure

FALLS VILLAGE — The gauge in these photos measures the height of the Housatonic River at the power station in Falls Village. The photos were shot at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday (above left) and again at about 3:15 p.m. (above), from the opposite bank on the Salisbury side of the river. The flow of the river, measured by the United States Geological Service in cubic feet per second, was 3,450 cubic feet per second (cfs) at the time of the morning shot, and 7,300 cfs in the afternoon. The gauge went from 4 feet to close to 7 feet in that period. At 8:15 Monday morning, the river was measured at 11,100 cfs. Tim Sargent and Jason Pollender from the U.S. Geological Survey were at the power station testing the calibration of the instruments, at about 11:30 a.m. Sargent said the agency double checks the equipment whenever there is a significant event. Their reading was 11,200 cfs. Meanwhile, Route 7 suffered its own flooding — as is seen in the lower left photo.
