Terra-cotta Women, Bar Codes and Plastic Cars

There’s lots of terrific art work showing in the Northwest Corner right now, really too much to keep up with, and that’s a good thing.

Lakeville’s Argazzi Art, Morgan Lehman Gallery, The White Gallery and the Tremaine Gallery at Hotchkiss celebrated the summer season’s first Gallery Night on May 26, which everyone seems to have declared a great success (watch for the next Gallery Night on June 30). At Argazzi, 22 Millerton Rd., a group show of nine fine artists includes the luminous, colorful work of Lakeville artist Sayzie Carr and Debra Fritts’ hand-built, terra-cotta sculptures of women at work, somewhat reminiscent of Degas’ ballerinas. Two horse drawings by Theodore Waddell are stunners. Other artists showing here are Hilary Cooper, Liz Dexheimer, Jeanine Esposio, Ann Mallory, Megan Murphy and Frank Shelton.Through June 26. Hours are Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tel: 860-435-8222.

Up the street, the Morgan Lehman Gallery, 24 Sharon Road, hosts three “emerging†artists, each with a very different and distinct style. Peter Barrett’s geometric, colorful works on canvas are reminiscent of  Op art; his undulating wall constructions, a kind of 3-D version of the oil paintings, are deliciously tactile. Josh Dorman’s pen and ink and painting on antique maps produces pieces that are lyrical and somehow solidly embedded in the scientific — at least as it was once perceived. And Laura Ball’s watercolors, which resemble intricately rendered and charmingly colorful children’s illustrations, explore the definition — and the boundaries — of games of war. Hours are Thursday-Sunday, noon-6 p.m. Through June 24. www.morganlehmangallery.com/ct.

“Works on Paper and Assemblages†at The White Gallery, 342 Main St., includes beautifully dreamlike prints by Ann Conrad, Constance Old’s mixed-media “Barcode Experiments,†which cleverly play on her consumer experience, and Eve Stockton’s abstract prints that evoke amazing depth and complexity. On a whole different note, Jane de Jonge offers “assemblagesâ€â€” little plastic dolls, cars, etc. — in amusing and observant settings. Her 3-D birthday cake calendar, complete with several confectionary tiers, whipped cream and strawberries, is something to see. So go see. Hours are Wednesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. www.thewhitegallery.com. Through June 24.

   Elsewhere, around and about:

In Salisbury, Litchfield resident Ina A. Williams exhibits her landscapes and flowers, “Seasonal Impressions,†at Chaiwalla tea house through June. Williams, who was born in Germany, honed her artistic sense through landscape gardening; she studied with Arthur Getz and Ira Barkoff, two artists who are also currently showing (at the Tremaine Gallery at Hotchkiss and the Ober Gallery in Kent, respectively). Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.  Shelley Parriott shows new steel mesh sculpture in an interactive exhibit on the grounds of Noble Horizons, 17 Cobble Road. These are fabulous constructions of rainbow colors that change with the light and are toy-like shapes. A tree at the entrance to the grounds is festooned with huge, colorful “ribbons.†This is a show the kids will love. You will, too. A walking map and information about the artist are available at the reception desk at the main entrance. Hours daily 10 a.m.-4 p.m. until Oct. 8. www.noblehorizons.org.

At the nonprofit Creative Hands Gallery at Eliza Peet, 17 Main St., you can catch the local landscapes of Millerton artist Nora Rivkin. Through June. Hours: Monday, Thursday.-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

A selection of works by legendary American photographer Ruth Orkin are on display at Joie de Livres, 7 Academy Street in Salisbury, through June 24. Tel.: 860-435-2332.

More local landscapes on view at the David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village, where John Pirnak’s oils are on display through June. Tel.:860-824-7424.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
