Trio writing stories for The Journal

Monica ChinMonica Chin of Lakeville has joined The Lakeville Journal as a summer intern. She just graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School and will attend Brown University in the fall. Chin played field hockey and lacrosse, was a member of the Alpine ski team and was treasurer of her class at Housatonic. She was also involved with the school newspaper, The Northwest Corner, and was published in the school’s literary magazine. She particularly liked writing op-ed pieces and said she got into many “interesting conversations” as a result.In her free time she enjoys playing hockey for the Connecticut Northern Lights, volunteering at TriArts, playing the clarinet and the tenor saxophone and working at Grand Union.Chin lives with her parents, Gene Chin and Jennifer Weigel, her two younger brothers, Eric and Matthew Chin, and her dog and two cats.Chin hopes to major in Brown’s literary arts and creative writing program next year. She is excited about her internship.— Hannah PatonChloe OcainChloe Ocain of Cornwall has begun an internship at The Lakeville Journal.Ocain has just completed her junior year at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. This summer, she will also be working as an intern at the Cornwall Historical Society and as a page at the Cornwall Public Library. During the school year, Ocain plays the oboe in the concert band , writes for the school newspaper, The Northwest Corner and is on the field hockey and swim teams. She hopes to attend a liberal arts college and study either international relations or political science. Ocain become involved with The Lakeville Journal to broaden her horizons and gain experience in the field.“I enjoy working for the school newspaper,” she said. “I would like to learn more about journalism and investigate possible future career options.”Ocain lives with her parents, Gary Ocain and Kathy Martin-Ocain, and her sister, Fiona Ocain.— Monica ChinHannah PatonHannah Paton of Amenia, N.Y., has joined The Lakeville Journal as an intern this summer. Paton graduated from The Hotchkiss School this spring and will continue her education at Bucknell University in the fall. She is currently undecided about her major, but is considering English or journalism. Interning at The Lakeville Journal seemed like a great way to further explore writing and interviewing and “help give me a possible direction for my major.” At Hotchkiss, Paton was on the cross-country, ice hockey and lacrosse teams. She has published articles in The Record, Hotchkiss’s newspaper, as well as in the school’s various literary magazines. She is a waitress at the Sharon Country Club during the summer. In her free time, Paton enjoys drawing and painting. Paton grew up in Amenia and attended St. Joseph School in Millbrook prior to high school. She is the daughter of Rob and Marian Paton and has an older brother, Erik, who is 21.— Chloe Ocain

WOODBURY — Nonnewaug High School claimed twin titles in the Berkshire League soccer tournament finals.

The school's girls and boys teams were named league champions after finishing the regular season with the best win/loss records. Winning the tournaments earned each team a plaque and added to the program's success in 2025.

Día de los Muertos marks a bittersweet farewell for Race Brook Lodge

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
