100 years ago — April 1907

CHAPINVILLE — Wallace Wright is the new blacksmith, comes with the right kind of papers.

 

A quarryman employed by the New England Lime company at the Canfield branch, East Canaan, was injured Monday. Besides sustaining some minor injuries the man had his leg broken.

50 years ago — April 1957

CANAAN — Mr. and Mrs. Alan Booth have moved from Sheffield, Mass., into the Consolini apartments on East Main Street. Mr. Booth is a teacher in North Canaan Elementary School.

FALLS VILLAGE — Michael M. Tyson, son of Mrs. Amy F. Barnes, of Old Bank Farm, has been awarded a varsity letter in hockey from Babson Institute, according to Richard Thomas, Babson Athletic Director.

 

CANAAN — Members of the Canaan Volunteer Fire Company answered three calls for assistance over the weekend. They went to East Canaan Saturday afternoon where there was a grass fire near the cemetery. The fire was out before their arrival. Sunday morning they gave an assist at a grass fire near the Lowell home on the Canaan- East Canaan Road and later fought a brush fire at the Canaan dump.

KENT — Miss Linda Card, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Card, celebrated her eighth birthday with a party for fourteen friends on Saturday.

25 years ago — April 1982

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Harry Williams and Rob Perotti; who make up a team at Advanced Auto Body and Repair, took over the former Cornwall Auto Body shop near the intersection of routes 4 and 7. Williams takes care of the body repair end of the business, while partner Rob Perotti handles the mechanical end.

 

LAKEVILLE — Charlotte H. Reid of Salisbury was elected to the Board of Directors of the Litchfield Savings Bank, it was announced this week.

Robert J. Pallone

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
