The Trustees of the Mount Riga Historical and Educational Foundation will hold a brief dedication ceremony at the site of the restored iron furnace on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The old stone cairn, once an important factor in the industrial life of Salisbury, had been reduced to little more than a pile of rubble when the Mt. Riga Foundation decided it should be restored. Once before, in 1935, a Hotchkiss Master, the late John Van Benschoten Griggs, had personally staved off the inroads of time and weather, giving his own time and labor to restoration of the old furnace. At the time of his death in 1954, a memorial fund was raised in his name. A part of this fund has been used toward the present complete restoration as a fitting memorial to one who was so identified with the Mountain that the late Miss Esther Frink relinquished her rights to the last plot in the Mt. Riga Cemetery so “Van” Griggs might be buried there.

CANAAN — Frank Stevens of West Main Street celebrated his 93rd birthday Sept. 1. Mr. Stevens was for many years Town Clerk of the Town of North Canaan. He has however for many years been confined to his home.

Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
